Almost there!

We're still on the plane to Frankfurt and (obviously) I'm not sleeping much (possibly 1-2 hours of intermittent dozing). The only entertainment so far is the guy in front of Leo who donned the damnedest contraption on his face (apparently for the purpose of sleeping). It looked like something made for a horse...it covered quite a bit of his face....maybe a bag-and-feed?? The first impression was that he resembled the guy on Silence of the Lambs (maybe it was that image before the lights went out that kept me from sleeping!).

So right now, the active map displayed on my tv screen says we have travelled 3863 miles and we only have 257 miles to go!! Yay! When we land, I think it will be around noon in Germany (the plane was delayed taking off for about an hour). It is amazing to think that it's been exactly 40 years (to the day) since I have been to Germany. I just wish I remembered more of the German language, but 40 years has erased ( or hidden) quite a bit. We'll see how much I can still sprechen der deutsch!

On the plane ride, the good part is that I only had to use the outhouse once. A young German man that was waiting in line, told me to go ahead, and so I did. When I stood in front of the bathroom door, I didn't see a door knob or any way to open it. I turned and looked at the young man who was still waiting for one to open up, and he just motioned for me to push...duh! That shows you how long it's been since I've used an airline toilet. I just don't get it...the plane's as long as a friggin' football field and all they can give you is the equivalent of a porta-john!

As we were waiting for the final approach to Frankfurt, Leo and I were talking about how totally amazing it is to think of Leo's ancestors. For those of you who don't know, Leo is 100% German, that is, ALL of his great-grandparents (8 of them) came over from Germany. They came to America on various ships that took God knows how long to arrive. How strange to think of something we take so for granted...flying...and how Leo's ancestors could never in their wildest imagination have conjured up an image of their great grandson getting in a flying machine to fly over the ocean to arrive in his ancestor's motherland in less than 8 hours (and this flying machine even had a porta-john on board!!) Well, it's just sort of crazy to think of.

I better close and start to organize our stuff to get ready for landing. I'll post more when we're on terra firma.

  3. Glad to hear your flight got off OK. Good thing you weren't booked on Lufthansa, all their flights were cancelled yesterday and today because of a strike.

I'm with you guys, even though flying can be frustrating at times, it is miracle that we should not take for granted. I watched this bit from comedian Louis C.K. recently where he was talking about people complaining about petty things on a airplane and he said "Everybody on every plane should just constantly be going 'OH MY GOD! WOW!' You're flying... you're sitting in a CHAIR in SKY."
